Critical thinking refers to a collection of affective dispositions (curiosity, flexibility, honesty, caution). It also involves a collection of cognitive skills including the interpretation of texts, the analysis of arguments, and the ability to infer conclusions, generate alternative explanations, justify procedures, present arguments and combine these skills to make an overall evaluative judgement. Today, we need to cope with information that is circulating and accumulating faster than ever before. Therefore, the analytic and evaluative processes which form the core of critical thinking have also become increasingly important. However, attempts to find instructional formats that help students develop maximum rational capability have not proved to be very successful thus far. The impact of education on our capacity for critical reflection has been shown to be far weaker than we expected or hoped. However, recent research shows that targeted practice in visualizing arguments along with a basic introduction to logic can improve certain critical thinking skills. The workshop is dedicated to an introduction to argument mapping as a critical thinking tool. You are invited to reflect on how you can develop your own teaching to improve critical thinking skills in your students."
Lernziele
- Participants are able to analyse and evaluate arguments
- Participants are able to apply visualisation of arguments as a tool for critical thinking in their own teaching practice, for example in a deep reading exercise.
