International research
environments are shaped by cultural diversity, differing communication styles,
and implicit academic norms. This course supports early-career researchers in
developing intercultural communication competencies essential for effective
collaboration and professional relationships in academia. Participants explore
how cultural backgrounds influence perception, communication, feedback, and
conflict, with a specific focus on everyday situations in research and higher
education.
The course introduces key concepts and frameworks of intercultural communication and applies them to typical academic scenarios such as meetings with supervisors, teamwork in international research groups, conference participation, and written communication. Through reflection, case-based discussions, and practical exercises, participants learn to recognise and manage misunderstandings, adapt their communication style, and build trust across cultural differences. The course emphasises reflexivity, respect, and professional effectiveness, enabling participants to navigate intercultural academic settings with greater confidence and awareness.
